Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Being a Detroiter, I grew up with the CBC broadcasting into my home, side by side with ABC, NBC, and the like. It was a treat to listen to Bob Cole broadcast games on Saturday nite, his quirky accent and homegrown sayings. Ron MacLean, the calm personality next to the outspoken Don Cherry. The Nordiques, the Jets. It was glorious, and is a major part of why I love hockey, and Canada, so much. And...

Hockey
I started a blog called Ron MacLean dedicated to NHL posts from the 80s and 90s. Follow it, love it, and, if you aren’t a hockey fan, grow to appreciate a golden era.

What I liked about first grade
By Eric Kehoe, 6 June 1994 Dear Mrs. Glotzhober, This is what I liked in grade one Word boxes and when we made snow forts.  I also liked Mr. Wizard.  I had good friends.  And library was borring. I remembered playing ice soccer that was fun!  I liked map study too. I didn’t like the practice book that’s weird!  I didn’t like the second recess.  It was wild! Your stinker,...

If I were a clown...
By Eric Kehoe, 25 May 1994 If I were a clown I would fall off the stage.  I would eat glue, fry an egg on my head.  Who would do that? I would put a whoopy cooshen on my couch an scare my cat!  He would freak OUT!!  It would be very fun!  And you geussed it: I’d play soccer.  Anybody could be a clown.  I would fall and tare the curton.  BIG BOOBOO!!! I would have red and lavender...

I moved out of my home today.
I lived in the Hawthorne House for three of my six years in the Grand Rapids area. It was the best house I ever lived in.  The roommates made it that way, of course.  Voortman playing Bully on PS2 after work every day and the “Wizard Room.”  Rinker and his videos and bike riding.  Creeger’s tea and exercise and books and drawl.  Adam’s war room and SI subscription, his...

Why do we love hockey so much?
Hockey is a metaphor for life, and that has been said hundreds of times.  What is it about this game—this unimportant, simple, joyous, silly game—that brings grown men to tears and strangers to hugs? As far as sports are concerned, hockey is the greatest.  The parity, the gumption, the skates, the surface, the overtime, the game 7; it’s a beautiful, take-your-breath-away...

If you feel the urge...
…check out the Hunger Project.  It gives those in need of aid the opportunity to help themselves and succeed; not as victims and not with hand outs, but as empowered men and women able to end their own hunger.  This is something that has been sorely lacking in international aid since it has existed. The amount of hurt and suffering in the world can be overwhelming and paralyzing....
