Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Being a Detroiter, I grew up with the CBC broadcasting into my home, side by side with ABC, NBC, and the like. It was a treat to listen to Bob Cole broadcast games on Saturday nite, his quirky accent and homegrown sayings. Ron MacLean, the calm personality next to the outspoken Don Cherry. The Nordiques, the Jets. It was glorious, and is a major part of why I love hockey, and Canada, so much.

And then it was gone.

For the past three years, ever since our antenna reception went digital, I could not find channel 9. And a bit of my home went with it. I moved on, of course. It was only a TV station. But whenever I would flip through the channels, I’d be a little disappointed HNIC wasn’t going to be there. Even the coverage of the Olympics would be missed.

And then Saturday was Hockey Day in Canada. A great day. And I figured I should try, one more time, to find Channel 9. One scan through the channels by my TV, and no luck. It was not to be.

But I figured, if the signal is coming from the west of my house, I suppose I should move the indoor antenna as far west as possible.

Now, in the corner of my living room, stands a fully extended microphone stand, with a TV antenna dangling on top, and CBC playing from the TV.

I feel home.
